₵ cheap · ₵₵ medium · ₵₵₵ dear. A rough guide for Accra markets; prices change with the season.
Cheap protein
Beans (red red, beans stew), eggs, tinned sardines or mackerel, koose and groundnuts. A little smoked fish goes a long way in a stew.
Cheap vegetables
Kontomire, garden eggs, okra, cabbage, carrots and tomatoes. Buy what is in season, and late in the market day when prices drop.
Starch
Kenkey, banku, ampesi and waakye are filling and cheap. Keep to 1 or 2 fists and fill the rest of the plate with vegetables and beans.
Ways to save
- Water instead of soft drinks and malt saves money every day, and cuts sugar.
- Fewer stock cubes and less oil save money as well as your health.
- Cook beans in a big pot and use them for two or three meals.
- Buy whole fish and share it across the family pot.
